As a responsible mother, the most important thing to remember is that you are your child’s role model, so be intelligent and sensible to introduce the healthy habits to your children and your family. Healthy habits are not only habits but these are life lessons. You need to start teaching to your kids by which the child would come out to be a great human being.
Your kids will carry taught habits with them long after you can carry them. Kids are like clay and you can mold them as you want but always remember one thing your kids will learn all good habits by observing you. So, teaching good habits to kids begins with practicing all the good habits by your own self.
Habit #1 – Eat Healthy :
A nutritious – well balanced diet is foundation of good health. So, Encouraging children to eat a healthy food is very important. Teach them how each food group and right amount of each in their diet is important. Explain to your child sources and functions of various components of food. Avoid giving processed food to your kids.Cook more meals at home and involve your kids in preparing meals and shopping from groceries. You can teach them about different foods as well as how to read labels.Make healthy snacks available. Kids who enjoy breakfast everyday have sharp memories with stable moods and energy.so,Make their breakfast time delicious with healthy food for best kick start of the day.Make meal times interactive to catch up your kid’s daily lives without interaction of mobile phones and T.V.
Habit #2 – Wake up early in the morning and sleep on time :
“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”
A correct waking up and sleeping schedule for your child is very important.Make habit of sleeping and waking up at the fixed time daily. It’s no rocket science and every mom knows it; still the reiteration is necessary as kids who sleep and wake up on a particular time daily have more concentration as sufficient sleep helps them stay fresh all day; thereby, keeping them more energized to manage daily tasks happily. your school going kid will not fussy in the morning to get ready for school if he has proper sleep and wakes up at time . Your child will have proper time for morning breakfast as Kids or adults; none should leave for home without having breakfast.
Habit #3 – Play outdoor games/sports :
Regular physical activity have number of long term health benefits. Mommies are really worried as their Kids often want to sit in front of the TV all day and night, watching shows back-to-back. However, most parents are aware of the downsides of too much screen time, like obesity, failing grades, and antisocial behavior. If you’re trying to figure out how to cut back on your kid’s TV time without going to war with them, encourage them for outdoor games.Outdoor games /sports are a best counteract for couch potato syndrome in today’s generation.
Not every child loves sports.If your child is not interested in sports encourage them to keep trying and you try to involve with your child.Help your child to take other physical activities like swimming,cycling,archery,gymnastics etc.Let your child experiment with different sports and physical activities until they find they love doing.They will surely carry their love of these activities in to adulthood.
Habit #4 – Reading Books :
Reading is one of the most essential skill a child needs to learn to succeed in life. Developing reading habits at early stages leads to a life long love for books. Your child can start developing good reading habits at home before he even learns to read.Developing good reading habits is vital to your child’s future not just for academic performance,but day to day life as well. There are numerous benefits of reading habits for your child. Here are some reasons :
- Reading encourages thirst for knowledge.
- It increases imagination power.
- It increases vocabulary and grammar.
- It enhances writing and speaking skills.
- It helps to improve concentration.
- It gives entertainment.
- It helps in overall development
- Child gets inspiration by reading life stories of successful persons,inspirational books etc.
Habit #5 – Good personal hygiene habits :
Good personal hygiene is essential to promoting good health. It is important to teach your child that our body has places for disease-causing germs to grow and fall us sick.These places are skin and other openings of the body. If you will develop good basic hygiene habits, Germs will have less chances to get inside your body.To maintain daily personal hygiene, following are very essential habits:
- Hand washing often : Teach your child to wash hands with soap and water thoroughly before eating and preparing food,after going to the toilet,after petting animals and after playing outdoors with dirty things .
- regular and proper bath: Teach your child to take regular shower at start of the day and at the end of the day. Girls should learn to wash their vulva gently to lower the chances of Urinary tract infections.Boys should learn to wash their penis and scrotum. Teach your son to regularly clean the tip of penis and avoid cleaning inside the foreskin until it can be pulled back.
- Brush teeth twice a day: Make a compulsion routine to your child to brush his/her teeth twice in a day,once in the morning and once before going to bed.
- covering the nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing
- Avoid littering.
One of the most important habit you can teach to your child is to seek the god in prayer every day. Making prayer a habit will benefit them their whole lives.Prayers will build relationship with God- Creator,preserver and destroyer.
When you make prayer part of your life. You reinforce your faith in the face of obstacles,prayers heals, prayers give strength in every situation,it will helps you to stay positive in any situation.
Teach them to pray:
- Before Meals: Praying before meals is a good habit to teach your child to be thankful for what they have.
- Bedtime prayer:Praying at bedtime helps them to reflect on their actions for the day and ask for guidance for the following day.
- Morning prayer: Praying in the morning is the best way to start a day.It ensures positive mind frame and helps to keep strong faith to overcome any challenge in a day.
Habit #7 – Gender Equality:
Main reason to teach about gender equality is that every child has a right to reach their full potential, and gender in equality prevents this by limiting what they can and can’t do. Lessons in gender equality should start at very early age and be repeated often because at age of 2 years, children start to notice physical differences between boys and girls. and at age of 3, they start to associate certain activities,roles and behaviour with each gender.If we want a society in which girls and boys are treated and treat each other with respect and kindness, and girls and boys are urged and expected to fulfill their ability without any type of restriction ,we should start teaching them a healthy concept of Gender.
Habit #8 – Save Money
When it comes to teaching your kids about saving money, its never too early.If you would like your child to manage money effectively, always remember your children will learn about saving money from observing you , so the best way to teach your child about saving money is to save money yourself. You can start with easiest way –Piggy bank. You can ask to your kids to deposit their monetary gifts, receiving from relatives or any other sources in to piggy bank.If you have school going child,open up a bank account for him/her and deposit amount of piggy bank in to bank and help them to understand banking, interest rate etc.
Habit #9 – Concept of Bad touch

we all want our children to be safe and secure.In today’s times,we know child abuse and molestation is at its pick point.so,It’s very important to teach kids about Good touch and Bad touch.First of all teach them that your body is your property.Nobody is allowed to touch them unless its okay with them. Take it easy . Talk causally and initiate the ‘ Touch- talk” during play time.Kids are always curious about their body parts.I think it really helps them to have knowledge of correct names of their anatomy.Most important thing is Empower your kids to say NO and teach them to SHOUT.
Habit #10 – Let Mom and dad know
Is your child keeping secrets from you? One of the rules we should have in family is this:” Children should never keep secrets from Mom and dad” .Help them to open up.Greater openness between parents and kids is important because today’s generation kids are articulate beyond belief.Children dont always open up what really bothers them from their peer group, internet,teachers or family members.Talk with them during meal time,drive time, play time, bath time as kids actually opens up in the middle of doing other things.“Makes your kids feel like you really care” will remove your fear from their little minds and they will open.
